Was Your Business Heart Broken On Valentines?

In a bit of guest blogging over Valentine's Day, our Technical Director, Gary and Sales Manager, Joe, have combined to write a love letter to the humble (but vital) database...

Dear database administrator,

Over the years we have built a long and trusting relationship. You have been generous providing me with plenty of information and I have rewarded you by complying with legal regulations, helping you to make informed management decisions, allowing you to spot trends, monitor performance and allow your team to perform efficiently. However, recently I have felt somewhat neglected. You don’t back me up as much as you used to, and when was the last time you gave me a test restore?

I'm feeling somewhat corrupted.

Good bye

Your vital database

No one likes feeling neglected especially around Valentine but what part of your business is needed but not appreciated until it is too late?

BACKUPS.

Try answering the following questions. If you can't answer them all off the top of your head then it might be worth spending some quality time with your database.

Who within your organisation is responsible for this very important task?
Does that person actually check the backup has successfully completed?
Who is responsible for backups when the main person is away?
Do you backup every day?
Do you verify the backup?
Do you actually know what is being backed up?
Are any changes to your system backed up?
Have you ever tried a restore from your backup?
Do you take the backup media off site?
Do you rotate your backup media?

If you love your business you should love your backup.

So now that all the fuss is over and you and your database have kissed and made up, perhaps it's time to get some professional relationship advice to ensure this doesn't happen again?
